This is a grey market 280 SLC. The SLC was, for all intents and purposes, a stretched, 4 passenger, hardtop version of the SL convertible.
The 280 SLC has a 2.8 liter straight 6 in it. We never officially saw this version in the US. Without the restrictive US emissions controls, the 6 put out around 182 HP. That's right around the same horsepower the 4.5 liter V8 created in the US spec 350 SLC and considerably more than the later (US Spec) 380 SLC produced. Being a European car it has the slim Euro bumpers, not the diving boards we got here.What makes this car interesting - and what may make it a tough sell - is what it doesn't have. In the US, we think of Mercedes-Benz cars as being luxurious and having every imaginable bell and whistle. That's not how they always came in Europe. This car has manual windows, no air conditioning and cloth seats.
This car is in very nice condition. It was imported in 1985 and is fully legal. At some point the exterior was repainted (the original color) and the interior re-done. The seller says in 2010 the mechanicals were "renewed".I don't know that I'd want a car without air conditioning as a daily driver (yeah, I'm becoming a wimp), but this would be a great car for Spring, Fall, and cool summer evenings drives.
