First Look: Korea's first supercar 2008 Spirra S

It has a mid-mounted, quad cam supercharged engine, forged alloy wheels, carbon fiber body panels and Brembo brakes. Claimed top speed is 190mph. It's a fast, good looking supercar with the sort of spec sheet you'd expect to find on something made in Italy. But the Korea's first supercar 2008 Spirra S is built near Seoul. Yup, meet Korea's first ever production supercar. It was only a matter of time.

The Spirra S is powered by a supercharged version of Hyundai's 2.7-liter V-6. Claimed output is 391hp at 6000rpm, with 256lb ft of torque available at 4500rpm. The engine drives the rear wheels through a six speed manual transmission. Claimed 0-60mph acceleration time is about 4.6 seconds.

The Spirra's race car-style space frame chassis is fairly conventional, with double wishbones and coil-over shocks at each corner. The five spoke forged alloys are 18in diameter front and rear; front tires are 235/40ZR18, while the rears are 275/40ZR18. Front brake rotors are 14in, gripped by six piston Brembo calipers, while the rears are 13.8in with four piston calipers.

2008 Spirra S

Carbon fiber body panels help keep the Spirra's claimed weight to just 2376lb. The body design is relatively generic mid-engined supercar stuff, but that's no bad thing - the Spirra S looks neat and handsome. The interior is also fairly conventional, although the center console boasts a sophisticated touch screen on-board computer system.

That's because Oullim Motors is part of Korean IT and electronics giant Oullim Group, which got into the auto business when it acquired Protomotors in 2007, the company which has been developing the Spirra for almost a decade. A concept version of the Spirra, the PS2, was first shown in 2001, and subsequent protoypes were revealed in 2003 and 2005.

Oullim sources say production of the Spirra S is scheduled to start next month. As the car will be hand-built, volume will be limited to 300 vehicles a year.

Even so, Oullim has plans to release even hotter versions of the Spirra, including a Turbo with 591hp and 350lb ft of torque, and a Bi Turbo model which retains 591hp, but churns out 401lb ft. The Spirra Turbo will be available with the choice of a conventional six speed manual, or a sequential shift transmission, which Oullim insiders claim will cut the 0-60mph time to just 3.4 seconds. The Spirra Bi Turbo will only be available with the sequential transmission, and will hit 60mph in 3.2sec.

AAA to Honor Students for Lifesaving Heroics

AAA will honor three AAA School Safety Patrol members with the Lifesaving Medal for their heroic actions that saved the lives of fellow elementary school students. Nicole Epstein, of North Chevy Chase Elementary School (Chevy Chase, Md.), pulled an eight-year-old student out of a crosswalk just prior to a vehicle hitting him as it made a right hand turn.

Covini C6W - The Six-Wheeled Supercar

Covini Engineering is a small company dedicated to constructing innovative automobile prototypes, as well as other experimental crafts. Back in 2005, they came up with the idea to add an extra axle to the front of a supercar to increase the car’s braking abilities, comfort, and directional stabiliy. The Covini C6W pictured below is the fruit of their labor.

Covini C6W -1Covini C6W -2The six-wheeled super gt packs more than 400 hp, while producing 470 Nm of torque at 2700 rpm. Not overly impressive given the cars savage appearance, but still respectable.

In the front, the Covini C6W rides on 15-inch rims, while the back sits on dubs. The overall look created is part Ferrari, part Lambo, and part jaguar XJ220. And we’re sure you could toss a few more design influences into the pot.

Since the C6W was built as a prototype, no pricing or production info is available. But we’re sure that if you want one Covini wouldn’t turn you down if you made them an attractive offer.

2010 Ford Fiesta Spotted in the Wild, Then De-Wilded

Prototypes for the North American-spec Ford Fiesta have been spotted in Dearborn, giving us our first look at the non-hatchback version. As expected, this prototype takes many cues right off the Verve four-door concept car that bowed at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. The camouflage keeps us from seeing just how verbatim the translation from concept to production actually is, but the differences will most assuredly only be trim differences designed to make the concept model as sexy as possible.

2010 Ford Fiesta Spotted -12010 Ford Fiesta Spotted -2It appears that the concept’s backlight might be a bit more raked than the production model, and the rear overhang may be a bit longer, but those impressions may be from a slight change of angle, and the camouflage cladding.

As of now, we’re told that this four-door sedan is the only model destined for our shores, but the three or five-door hatchbacks could easily make the move to U.S. showrooms if demand is deemed strong enough.

To signal the beginning of sales of the M3 convertible in the UK, BMW decided to release two-dozen more photos of its drop-top super coupe, and that's enough of a reason for us to include them in a gallery with its white counterpart.

Beijing Auto Show 2008: Geely CE concept makes its debut

Ok, the Geely car parade at Beijing is officially in full swing. One of the good-looking renderings we posted during the runup to the show was of the CE concept, a small hatchback that looked like it could just as easily be an Acura that's slumming in the entry-level class. In the metal, it looks pretty much exactly like the rendering -- a well-styled little Acura 5-door hatch. Only that's the Geely badge on that shield-shaped grille. It It is better-looking than any of Geely's current market offerings, and that's about all there is to say, because we have neither interior shots nor technical details to flesh things out any further. As such, we'll treat it as a styling exercise that's likely got Honda/Acura designers grumbling under their breath, and Chinese showgoers and (potential car-buyers) nodding approvingly.
