1977 Chevrolet Vega Kammback - 3,957 Original Miles

"Today a running Vega is a far less likely sight on America's roads than, say, a '55 Bel Air or '69 Camaro or even the scandal-plagued Corvair. Save for a bare few running with V8s on drag strips and a handful of limited-edition, twin-cam Cosworth models, the Vegas are practically all gone."

That paragraph is taken from an excellent Popular Mechanics article tilted, "How the Chevy Vega Nearly Destroyed GM" (Find it here. It's well worth reading.)

This one somehow survived.

1977 was the last year for the Vega and the car was at its best. ("Best" being a relative word here.) The engine, which was notoriously bad, had been sorted and horsepower increased to 84. A 4 speed manual transmission replaced the standard 3 speed of the early cars. The body, which on early cars set a new standard for rust (It was not uncommon for the fenders to start to rust on 1 year old cars), had been improved and the interior was more luxurious. ("Luxurious" being another relative word.)

For a 70's small car it's not bad looking. The nose isn't great, but much of that is due to the mandated 5 MPH bumper. (The early pre-5 MPH bumper cars had a nice, Camaro-like nose.) The rest of the body is clean and almost sleek, especially when compared to the Japanese station wagons of the day. (The fake woodgrain on this one really detracts from the looks of the car.) The interior doesn't look like a place you'd want to be for a very long time, but again, when compared to other small cars of the day, it's not bad. Looking at this car makes you realize just how badly GM's corporate dysfunction and greed screwed up what could have been a decent car.

This car has just 3,957 miles on it. The seller says that the mileage is verifiable. He says it has every option GM offered except for cruise control.

I can make a pretty good case for purchasing just about any old car. However, I can't give you a good reason to pay almost $10K for this car, unless you're opening a museum for bad engineering and corporate greed and you're looking for a pristine example of a car that represents both. I'm just pointing it out because it's so unusual to see a Vega still around and in this condition.

Toyota recalls 245,000 Lexus sedans in U.S., 1.7 million cars globally

 01 2006 lexus is630opt1 450x270 Toyota recalls 245,000 Lexus sedans in U.S., 1.7 million cars globally

We won’t blame you for reading this headline and thinking, “Oh great, another Toyota recall.” After all, the Japanese automaker dominated headlines in 2010 by recalling every single model in its then-current product portfolio, including the massive sticky pedal and unintended acceleration recalls that took place in the first half of last year.

Now, Toyota has issued a voluntary recall on about 245,000Lexus sedans here in the United States and an additional 1.5 million vehicles around the world. Here in the U.S., the 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300 and GS 350, 2006-2009 Lexus IS 250 and 2006-2008 Lexus IS 350 sedans are being recalled due to faulty installation of fuel pressure sensors. If this sensor has not been fastened tightly enough, fuel has the potential to leak between the gasket that connects it to the fuel delivery pipes. Including these North American vehicles, the fuel sensor recall affects 354,524 vehicles around the world, with Automotive News citing that the Toyota Crown and Mark X sedans are being recalled in the automaker’s home market.

Toyota’s other global recall involves faulty fuel pipes and fuel check valves, though none of the 1.34 million vehicles affected by this one are in North America. In Japan, the RAV4 crossover, Voxy and Noah minivans are being recalled, as well as the Avensis sedan and wagon sold in Europe.

Toyota teases FT-86 II concept for Geneva

toyota ft 86 ii 450x270 Toyota teases FT 86 II concept for Geneva

Subaru has already confirmed that it’s sports car being jointly developed with Toyota is coming to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Now Toyota is getting into the action by announcing today that its version of the jointly developed sports car, the FT-86, will be there… and it will be an evolution of the concept shown back in 2009 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The updated version is called the Toyota FT-86 II and promises to be our clearest view yet of what the production vehicle will look like.

Toyota is also going so far as to say that the FT-86 II will prove the automaker has a “reborn passion for sports car driving.” If the FT-86 II can evoke memories of Celicas, Supras and even a hint of the legendary 2000GT, then we say build it as fast as you can.

Toyota-based Subaru Trezia hatchback headed to Europe

trezia0lo2 413x300 Toyota based Subaru Trezia hatchback headed to Europe

When we think about Toyota-Subaru collaboration, the first thing that comes to mind is the highly anticipated rear-wheel-drive “Toyobaru” project. But while the FT-86 and its Subie sibling are first in our thoughts, it wasn’t number one to market.

Automotive News reports that Subaru is set to unveil the Trezia hatchback in March at the Geneva Auto Show. The roomy five-door, which closely mirrors the Honda Fit in most every measurement, will be a near spot-on match of the Toyota Verso it’s based on, but with an Impreza-style grille slapped on the front clip and some Subaru badging sprinkled throughought. Both the Toyota Verso (named Ractis for JDM consumption) and Subaru Trezia are being sold in Japan now, and both vehicles are destined for Euro showrooms this spring.

In Japan, the Trezia is powered by a choice of 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter inline-four cylinder gasoline engines mated to a CVT, but in Europe the 1.5 will be replaced with a 1.4-liter diesel. In Japan, the Trezia can be had with all-wheel-drive provided car buyers check off the box for the more powerful engine, which will likely be the turbodiesel in Europe.

With its roomy interior and diminutive footprint, the Trezia will likely do well overseas. But will we ever see Subaru’s Fit-fighter in North America? With gas prices once again on the rise, it might not be a bad idea.

Toyota remains world’s largest automaker for third year in a row despite troubles

gyi0062137241 450x290 Toyota remains worlds largest automaker for third year in a row despite troubles

Despite weathering a rocky 2010 marked by repeated recalls, Toyota managed to remain the world’s largest automaker last year. According to Bloomberg, the Japanese manufacturer saw its sales rise by eight percent to 8.42 million units if you include Lexus, Hino and Daihatsu. That figure beat out General Motors, which saw its sales increase by 12 percent with 8.39 million units sold.

While Toyota’s sales in the U.S. market dropped by 0.4 percent due to safety concerns, the automaker saw large increases in China. The company’s sales in the People’s Republic jumped by 19 percent, though General Motors saw its Chinese sales increase by 29 percent.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, managed to move 7.14 million vehicles during 2010, cementing its place as the third-largest automaker in the world. That figure marks a 14 percent increase over 2009, and VW says that it fully expects to see sales increase by five percent in 2011.

Toyota is forecasting its sales to hit 8.6 million vehicles in 2011.

Mommies on Minivans: Practical, but where’s the style?

28 2012 ford c max 450x240 Mommies on Minivans: Practical, but wheres the style?
Toyota can call the Sienna a swagger wagon all it wants, but the slogan isn’t going to make moms any happier about hopping behind the wheel. According to The Detroit Free Press, most mothers aren’t fooled by gimmicky marketing or the latest attempts to redesign the minivan as a stylish piece of transportation. Reporter Krista Jahnke followed a group of mothers from Detroit.MomsLikeMe.com as they toured the Detroit Auto Show to critique the latest wave of minivans.

What did they think? While the vast majority appreciated the added creature comforts of the newest generation of family haulers, they still seemed to feel that the minivan was always going to be a practical choice first and an aesthetic one dead last.

One woman even admitted that she cried the first time she had to drive a minivan. Admittedly, we feel her pain.

The crew took the time to check out the all-new Ford C-Max, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Dodge Grand Caravan and Volkswagen Routan, and was kind enough share its opinion on each. Despite its significantly smaller size, the C-Max fared well amongst those who know minivans best, while the Grand Caravan was penalized for its cavernous, grime-trapping center console. Head over to The Detroit Free Press to see all of their impressions.

1977 Toyota Celica Liftback - The "Japanese Mustang". Toyota introduced this car to the US in 1976. It managed to look more like a Mustang than the then current Mustang II did.

Rust, teenagers and bad modifications took their toll on these cars. It's really nice to see one in this shape.

1968 Toyota Corona - This is certainly not the most exciting car I've ever written about, but it's great to see one in this condition.

The Corona was not a styling tour de force, but it's not bad looking. From certain angles you can see some Italian and British styling influences.

I hope the new owner keeps this car in the condition it is in today. There are so few unmolested examples of these cars left.

Located in Pacifica, CA, click here to see the eBay listing.

1966 Honda S600 - I can't remember the last time I saw one of these in person.

These are fun cars. The styling is great both inside and out. The 600cc engine has 4 carbs and an 8500 RPM redline. The car weighs next to nothing and the tiny engine moves it at a very good clip.

As the seller mentions, these cars are starting to increase in value. This one is in very nice condition. It will be interesting to see how much it sells for.

Ducati inspires Moto-Terminator concept

For those who love terminator and its series here’s some joy. The bike used for the Terminator Salvation movie, the moto-terminators was an inspiration from the Ducati Hypermotard 1100. it’s amazing how a bunch of smart dudes get together, collect a concept, gain inspiration and then make something that will go down in history as a legend. By the looks of this, the Moto-Terminator looks like it will be the G I Joes for the next generation. For the boys only… it still doesn’t look appealing for girls, I bet.

1972 Detomaso Pantera - It's probably been well over 30 years since something like this was a relatively common sight; a Detomaso Pantera sitting on a used car lot. But that's where this one is, complete with a price and writing on the windshield.

This is not my favorite color on a Pantera (or any car), but it looks to be in great condition.

1989 Peugeot 505 Turbo - The 505 Turbo is an under appreciated car in the US. It's luxurious, fast, and, with routine maintenance, reliable. Peugeot, unfortunately, did just about everything wrong when it came to marketing (all) their cars here. Most people have no idea how good these cars are, if they even know what a Peugeot is at all.

This is a restored 5 speed Turbo.

If I had the spare time and money, I'd fly out to CA and buy this car. Then, just for the shear pleasure of it, I'd drive it back to New England, where I live.

Located in Palo Alto, CA, click here to see the Craigslist ad.

1982 Dodge Rampage - When was the last time you saw one of these? Little car-based pick up trucks looked like they were going to be all the rage for awhile. VW had one, Subaru had the BRAT, and Chrysler had this. They never really caught on. Slow, small pick ups with limited cargo capacity wasn't what the pubic wanted.

I used to laugh at these when I saw them. But, I now find myself looking at this one and thinking "Hmmm, with a good cleaning and buffing and a set of tasteful aftermarket wheels, this might be a pretty cool car / truck to own." (Maybe I shouldn't have had that drink with dinner.)

1988 Saab 900 SiS Automatic - A Rare Version of a Rare Car

This is really interesting.

There were just 288 Springtime in Sweden or "SiS" models produced. They were gifts to Saab's 288 US dealers.

Each SiS car was painted black, had a buffalo grey leather interior and a black convertible top. Each came with a special plaque on the dashboard. All were turbos. 284 had a 5 speed manual transmission. 4 came with an automatic. It's that last sentence that makes this car very interesting... It's an automatic.

The classic Saab 900 was notorious for having bad automatic transmissions. This car had its transmission replaced about 40,000 miles ago.

I know that an automatic is not the first choice of transmissions for most car enthusiasts, but, hey, this is only one of four to come this way. Assuming it's a real SiS (and there are supposedly some counterfeits out there), that's got to mean something to someone.

1972 Volvo 144S - What It Meant To Drive A "Green Car" Back In '72

Talk about a car from another time... A time when Volvo built boxy sedans that ran forever and a time when cars came painted this color.

The 144 was Volvo's first "box". Introduced in 1967, it ultimately replaced the Amazon in Volvo's lineup. It was a sensible car with few frills. It was meant to move people safely and comfortably, which it did.

The 4 cylinder "B20" engine found in this car is amazingly durable. 200,000+ miles is normal, 300,000 - 400,000 is not unheard of. (The world's highest mileage car, a 1966 Volvo P1800 with close to 3,000,000 miles, has a B20 engine in it.)

This car was purchased new by the Mayor of Lancaster, PA. He was obviously an early proponent of "green cars".

This car has just 58,000 miles on it. That's barely break in mileage for an old Volvo. The car has belonged to Swedish Motors, Inc. for the past 20 years. It's been in their indoor showroom, serviced regularly and occasionally "exercised" to keep everything in working order.

Talk about a time capsule. Just about everything about this car looks perfect. The exterior was repainted in 1990, but the interior is completely original. (Volvo, in an amusing nod to "luxury", gave these cars some fake woodgrain on the dash. The location of the radio is amusing, too. The driver has to reach all the way across the car to change the station. Not a very safe feature from a company known for its safety innovations.)

The color combination is original and, well, interesting. Green over green. It's not a nice, deep, British Racing Green, but more of a "peace, love and drugs" green. It's a little tough on 2011 eyes, but it's perfect on a 1972 vintage car.

You rarely see a Volvo 144S in this type of condition. Most non-sports cars that have been in storage for many years were put there originally because something had failed on them. Nothing ever failed on these cars. Most were run until an accident or rust (and while a 144 will rust, it was better than most 1970s cars) finally put an end to its life.

This is just a cool old car. I can't think of a better way to "go green" than with this car.

Toyota concept is the FT-86′s little sister

t sport concept 630 1295295948 450x271 Toyota concept is the FT 86s little sister
We’ve been clamoring for a date with the production version of the Toyota FT-86 for longer than we care to remember, but we officially have a new infatuation. Meet the boxer coupe’s younger sister – the TES T-Sport Concept. If our Google Translator is to be believed, the car supposedly originated from an inner-company survey that asked what type of cars Toyota engineers would most like to see built. Apparently the overwhelming answer was a fun-to-drive, affordable sports car.
Color us stunned.
From there, the Toyota Engineering Society set about crafting their vision of a low buck machine that could still slather a smile on your face. Power comes courtesy of a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with around 110 horsepower, and this thing hits the scales at less than 2,000 pounds. That sounds like a winning combination to us. The T-Sport Concept wears some plenty funky styling, but we certainly wouldn’t hold that against a would-be Mazda MX-5 competitor. As with most things awesome that hail from auto shows, there’s little likelihood that the T-Sport will ever see production. Head over to AutoGuide to get a closer look at the two-seater.

Dana coughs up $25M to Toyota over rusty Tacoma frames

19980012000tacoma 1 403x300 Dana coughs up $25M to Toyota over rusty Tacoma frames
When an automaker is forced to issue a recall, the defective part or feature is generally the fault of the automaker or of an OEM supplier it contracted to. In the case of the Toyota Tacoma – part of a 110,000-unit recall in 2009 – the problem appears to have been traced back to the supplier. And now the supplier is forced to pay for its mistakes.
The company in question, according to reports, is Dana, the Ohio-based OEM contractor supplying (among other components) axles and driveshafts for automobiles, commercial trucks and heavy equipment. In this case, it supplied the frames for the Tacoma pickup which were found to rust when exposed to road salt.
Although in 2010 Dana sold the plant that manufactures the frame to Mexican conglomerate Grupo Porza’s Metalsa subsidiary, since the component in question was built prior to the sale (from 1995 to 2000), Dana has reportedly been forced to shell out $25 million to Toyota over the issue.

You’ve seen the Toyota GRMN iQ Racing Concept (lucky you!), and now it’s time to divert your attention towards the rest of the Japanese automaker’s wares being shown off at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
First up is the Toyota Prius G Sports Concept, which features the kind of gaping maw only the Mama Cylon could love. Rounding out Toyota’s offerings is the TRD Auris GT Concept, which we think actually looks kinda nifty with its subdued body kit and blindingly bright yellow paint.
Lexus wasn’t left out of the proceedings either, and its machines are arguably more interesting than its mothership’s. There’s the F-Sport CT 200h (a future production model) taking center stage with its unique alloy wheels, body kit and Recaro seats, which is joined by the IS F Club Circuit Sports Racer and a set of Club Performance Accessories for the IS F that include front and rear spoilers and a carbon fiber hood.
Last but certainly not least is the Gazoo Racing Lexus LFA supercar that raced at last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours race. See both sets of vehicular craziness in our high-res image galleries below, then check out all the details in the press releases after the break.

2011 Toyota Highlander

lead1 2011 toyota highlander review 450x298 2011 Toyota Highlander
After more than a decade of wild growth and nearly limitless prosperity, Toyota experienced an unthinkable 2010 – the bandwagon derailed in a very ugly, very public way. Embarrassing recalls played their role in the Japanese automaker’s uncharacteristic slide, but even though that public black eye is beginning to heal, Toyota is still grappling with an aging product lineup. The Camry and Corolla still sell in massive numbers, but they’re growing long in the tooth. Admittedly, the latter received a very mild refresh for 2011, but the competition has caught up with each in every category that counts. It’s much the same story for Toyota’s truck and SUV portfolio, where the RAV4, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser and Tundra are hardly spring chickens.
Compounding the issue is the lukewarm response to some of its newly refreshed. The styling remains staid. The interiors are no longer class-leading. The powertrains and fuel economy have done little to separate them from the rest of the pack. Still, not all Toyota models are headed off the reservation. The redesigned Siennahas been well-received and is doing good work on the sales floor. The same can still be said for the Prius and the redesigned 4Runner, which is selling far better than its predecessor. The subject of Toyota’s latest refresh and the vehicle featured here, the 2011 Highlander, has been consistently successful over its lifespan. Will new tweaks to the seven-passenger crossover help this perennial top-seller stay near the top of the pack, or could the lack of a more comprehensive redesign relegate this CUV to also-ran status?

Toyota sees increased U.S. market share in 2011

toyota logo highlander 2011 450x300 Toyota sees increased U.S. market share in 2011
2010 was as rough a year as Toyota has experienced in many-a-decade, but the Japanese automaker reportedly senses a rebound in 2011. The Detroit News reports that team Toyota predicts that in 2011 it will outpace industry growth due in part to 10 revamped models across its Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands.
And Toyota isn’t just optimistic about its prospects in the year ahead; the automaker feels sales will jump to 12.5 million units on an annualized basis, up a million units from 2010. Many industry analysts polled by The Detroit News seem to agree with that sentiment as well, with figures ranging from 12.5 to over 13 million cars and trucks sold in 2011. Further into the future, Toyota reportedly sees sales hitting 15 million units by 2015.
After the year Toyota had, we are a little surprised that the Japanese automaker is this bullish on 2011. But then again, Toyota struggled as much with an aging lineup as it did with millions of recalls. Ten new models can go a long way toward repopulating dealers with new customers, especially if U.S. car buyers can forget about 2010 as fast as Toyota hopes they do.

Japan’s production of small cars down 30.3% for November

00 2011 toyota corolla opt2 450x300 Japans production of small cars down 30.3% for November
2011 Toyota Corolla – Click above for high-res image gallery
November’s automobile production, not to be confused with total sales, has dropped by 6.7 percent in Japan as compared to a year ago. According to data published by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, November 2010 automobile production hit 802,009 total units. However, the overall drop fails to tell the whole story.
Japan’s production of standard cars – vehicles with an engine that displaces two liters or more – shot up 3.7 percent year-on-year in November. Likewise, truck production rose by 3.3 percent to 101,853 units and bus output increased by 11.7 percent, hitting 10,348 units. So, larger vehicle’s fared well, but how about the small autos?
Overall, passenger car production dropped off by 8.2 percent, falling to 689,808 units. Output of small cars – vehicles with an engine that displaces between 660 cc and 2.0 liters, just outside the tiny Kei car class – declined by 30.3 percent and mini cars (under 660 cc) were down 4.2 percent. Though production numbers have no direct connection to sales, the reported figures seem to suggest that Japan’s enthusiasm for smaller autos, which are likely to be more fuel efficient than larger vehicles, is waning.
