1985 Innocenti De Tomaso Turbo

An Innocenti De Tomaso is on the Top 10 list of old cars I want to own someday.

I wrote about one of these back in November, 2009. (Find the post here.) As I mentioned in that post, I got a chance to drive one during a trip to Canada many years ago. It was an absolute blast to drive.

The Innocenti De Tomaso is one of those cars that's not extremely quick on paper (0-60 takes around 10 - 12 seconds, depending on which source you believe), but feels like a rocket when you're behind the wheel. The turbocharger encourages you to keep the revs up, making the Daihatsu sourced 3 cylinder engine feel more Italian than Japanese. It handles a lot like the Mini it's based on.

This car has a "European body kit" on it. Among other things, the bumpers are smaller and there are front and rear fog lights. Most of these cars had dark lower body panels, but this one has been painted solid red. It looks very good.

Parts are not all that tough to find. There is an active club and, as was typical of small volume Italian manufacturers, many of the switches and other small parts were sourced from other manufacturers. They were officially imported into Canada and some parts can still be found there. This car comes with a spare engine and some other parts, including the original wheels (which I like better than the "bright" ones that are on it now).

Being a 26 year old car, there would be no problem bringing it to the US and titling it here.
