Volkswagen Tiguan - What the Auto Press Says??

The 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan ranks 5 out of 23 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 24 published reviews and test drives of the Volkswagen Tiguan, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

In this economy, the Tiguan will disappoint a lot of shoppers because it’s one of priciest SUVs in its class. Still, the price is fair for what you get: a nice interior and attractive exterior styling that reflect the Tiguan’s German roots.
Starting at about $24,000, the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the most expensive affordable compact SUVs. Reviewers, however, do like what you get for nearly $24,000: standard Bluetooth technology, sporty car-like driving dynamics and a high-quality German interior. “The 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan offers a different flavor in a vanilla class by trading some practicality for a top-notch cabin and European driving manners," says Edmunds.

However, at this price, the Tiguan could be better. First, cargo space is on the small side, making this compact SUV less than ideal for families with young children. Second, the Tiguan uses premium fuel and has one of the lowest fuel economy ratings in the class. Third, once shoppers add features like all-wheel drive and a navigation system, the Tiguan quickly approaches $30,000.

That said, the Tiguan is the only German car in this class, which means you’ll have to check out luxury compact SUVs if you want a larger selection of European vehicles. These cars start at about $32,000 and can get really expensive once you add options. In this light, the Volkswagen Tiguan is a steal for budget shoppers who want European luxury for less.

Other SUVs to Consider
If you can pass on the Tiguan’s sporty driving dynamics, German nameplate and meager cargo room, there are plenty of affordable compact SUVs that will meet your needs. Let’s start with the Hyundai Tucson, one of the most affordable cars in the class that sips fuel and doesn’t offer a skimpy features list. The Tucson averages 23/31 mpg city/highway with six-speed automatic transmission. It also offers nice interior options like USB connectivity, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel and Bluetooth for about $22,000 when you choose the GLS trim. This is a great deal when you compare the Tucson GLS to the Tiguan’s base price.

The Honda CR-V surpasses the Tiguan when it comes to cargo space and utility. Made for families on the go, the CR-V’s cargo can hold 72.9 cubic feet of stuff with the seats folded. It also has an interior cargo shelf and cubbies that make organizing a breeze for busy parents. Starting at about $22,000, the CR-V is priced affordably, but can get expensive when you added extra features.

Details: Volkswagen Tiguan
The 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan is available in three trims: the S, SE and SEL. The S trim starts at about $24,000. Volkswagen's all-wheel drive system, 4motion, is available on the SE and SEL trims.

Is 3D Projection the New Flash Mob Marketing Event?

I've watched a few flash mob marketing events on YouTube and wonder why am I watching this. It's interesting for maybe 10 seconds but a 1:38-minute video of Can't Touch This... Is this really a good use of my time? I find I have the same experience with the latest trend in event marketing - 3D Projection Imaging.

Just like flash mob videos, 3D Projection Imaging videos always show the people at the event with their mobile phones capturing the moment and being in awe of what is happening where they are. That experience doesn't translate well for someone watching it happen on a YouTube video while at their computer. I guess you just had to be there to really get the experience.

3D Projection Imaging is cool looking and it is certainly more likely to get shared than say the typical TV ad or other attempt at social content, but that's a guess as I don't have any deep dive analysis into whether that is true or not. What I do know is that interesting content that is promoted effectively is likely to see more shares than stuff that is boring and/or has no media push.

Hyundai comes with the latest attempt at trying to capture interest with their Accent promotion and even include a Making of Film. The execution is nicely done with the suspended vehicle looking as if it is driving in multiple scenes there on the building. And even if 3D Project Imaging is starting to get old (see several automotive examples below), it is something fairly recent here in the States and showcases Hyundai's tag line "New Thinking. New Possibilities" in a creative way.

For more examples of how automotive marketers have used 3D Projection Imaging in campaigns, please checkout the following examples from Volvo, BMW, and Volkswagen.

Volvo gave it a try in Frankfurt, Germany on September 2009:

BMW's execution May 2010 in Singapore:

Volkswagen Polo showcased their attempt in April 2010. Be forewarned this example shows what one can do without a big budget:

The Toyota "Force"

I'm sure many of you remember Volkswagen's "The Force" Super Bowl commercial. If you do not, you can read about it here. You know you made an ad that resonated with the public when you get some parodies on YouTube. The best one by far is this Toyota example that brings a bit of automotive recall hijinks to the mix.

Enjoy.

VW Banner Brings the Inside Out

Everyone wants to convince you their small vehicle feels big inside. With car companies moving to more B and C class segment platforms to appease the desire for more fuel efficient cars in America, the marketing must find creative ways to illustrate, through images or words, how roomy all these new small cars really are, even if they are not. Americans like big and small products still need to be sold as such.

One interesting example of creatively showing a "huge" interior from a small car comes from BBDO for their client Volkswagen. The ad markets the VW Fox (not available here in the United States) with the car's interior being pulled inside out to reveal the interior in an interesting fun way.

The banner uses a slider that changes the car from the beginning to end frame shown in the image above. You can also play with the banner at BannerBlog here.

It is a clever execution and maybe there is a way to use this technique in a more interesting way to communicate a vehicle's inner beauty as I feel it isn't really that effective at communicating the interior as roomy or "huge" as the ad copy reads. It is playful, but does one really get the idea the car has decent dimensions inside? Not quite.
