Built for just 2 years (1964 & 1965) the 2 door wagon was meant to be more of a delivery wagon than a station wagon. This was the bottom end wagon, the least expensive, the least equipped. It wasn't even called a Chevelle, it was known as the 300. It came with rubber floor mats instead of carpeting and virtually no comfort or convenience features. In typical 1960s GM fashion, you could add just about any option you wanted, but few people ordered more than a radio (and an AM only one at that).
In retrospect, it was the coolest looking wagon Chevy built during those years. It bears a slight resemblance to the Chevy Nomad, especially the forward slanted window pillar. The windows didn't roll down, but were sliders.
Most of these cars came through with 6 cylinder engines. An 8 was an option, but only 650 cars were built with one.
It seems like most of these cars do have V8s now. Not that I've seen many, but I don't think I've ever seen a 2 door wagon that hasn't been customized in some way. This car is no exception.This car now has a 350 V8. It also has a different transmission and rear. It has new seats and carpeting. It needs a little bodywork and has a couple of small electrical issues.
I'm featuring this car not because of what it has, but because of what it doesn't have. There are no side pipes, no stripes, no flames, no hood scoops, no window tint, etc, etc. The body is as close to original as I've seen.
Flaws and all,the asking price of $8500.00 for this car seems pretty reasonable as restored examples are going for $20K plus in any cases.
I wonder how many SS versions of the 300 wagon could Chevy have sold had they made one?
