DKW, along with Audi, Horch and Wanderer were part of Germany's Auto Union group. Daimler-Benz bought Auto Union 1957. They sold it to Volkswagen in 1964, who merged it with NSU and formed what we know today as Audi.
According to the seller, this car was purchased new in Peoria, IL, by a man who owned a mobile TV and radio repair business. In 1969 he parked it in his garage, where it remained until September 2010.
Check out the design elements of this van. There are some really cool, unique, little details. I love how the headlights stay in place when the hood is raised.
The body is in remarkable condition. The odometer reads 33,532 miles. It has a bit of rust but, but that's to be expected on an unrestored vehicle. The 3 cylinder, 2 stroke engine may be seized, but since this engine was used for a long time in a variety of DKW vehicles, finding a good used one - or parts to rebuild the engine in this one - shouldn't be too tough.
It's pretty amazing to see a vehicle like this in this condition. How many DKW vans were sold in the US? Very few, I suspect. How many wound up in a garage on jack stands for 42 years? I would bet this is the only one.
